The opening conference of the Interreg project DanubeSediment_Q2, led by the consortium of the Vienna University of Natural Sciences, took place in Vienna on 25-26 March, with the participation of the General Directorate for Water Management (OVF).
The project is an international initiative of 14 partner institutions, funded by the Danube Region Programme (co-funded by the EU) and aims to promote sustainable sediment management in the Danube river basin. To this end, it is developing a plan for the first Integrated Sediment Management Plan (ISMP) for the Danube River Basin. Concrete solutions and development proposals will be included in the next Danube River Basin Management Plan and the Flood Risk Management Plan by the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River Basin (ICPDR). To achieve this for the first time, it will be essential to develop an improved and extended combined sediment quantity and quality monitoring network, as well as a new hydromorphological assessment method and a new sediment risk assessment method for the results. Through social involvement, the different sectoral needs will be integrated into the project.
The objectives of the project are:
- Improved sediment monitoring, data management and evaluation methods in the Danube River Basin.
- Feasibility of practical solutions for sediment alteration management developed in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Develop a transboundary Integrated Sediment Management Plan (ISMP) for the Danube River Basin.
Project duration: 01 January 2024 - 30 June 2026
